Measure the finished shape. For round columns, size means diameter. For square columns, size means one side. Structural dimensions must come from the project design.

Estimate matches the inputs shown.

The calculation

A visible formula, not a black box.

Volume · Mathematical derivationvolume = cross-sectional area × height × quantity × (1 + waste allowance)

Inputs are converted to a common base unit before calculation. Purchase quantities are rounded only at the final buying boundary.

Worked example

Worked example: concrete column

The calculated total after the entered allowance is 1.02 yd³. The suggested concrete order is 1.25 yd³, after rounding to a 0.25 yd³ supply increment. The intermediate volume and purchase quantity are intentionally different: the supplier increment is applied after the allowance, not as another percentage.

Common mistakes

Check the job, not just the number.

  1. 01Entering the radius where the field asks for the full column diameter.
  2. 02Multiplying a group total by the column count a second time.
  3. 03The model does not size a structural column, specify reinforcement, assess form pressure or deduct displacement. Tapered columns and mixed sizes require separate geometry; form capacity and safe placement remain project-design decisions. For round columns, size means diameter. For square columns, size means one side. Structural dimensions must come from the project design.

Concrete column FAQ

Is the round-column size a radius or diameter?

It is the full diameter across the section. Entering a radius as the diameter quarters the section area. Check the label before converting a plan dimension into the chosen input unit.

Does the estimate include the footing under each column?

No. The volume covers the entered column section and height only. Calculate the footing separately, and count any overlap with the column or pedestal only once.

Which assumptions should I check before using this concrete column result?

Use measured form dimensions and an allowance appropriate to placement and supplier delivery. Treat changes in section, height, embedded bases and irregular capitals separately; do not increase the diameter merely to represent general spill. The example dimensions are not a recommendation for your project.

Project notes

Measure, adjust, and verify.

Details specific to concrete column planning.

01

How to measure

Choose the actual round or square section. For round columns enter diameter, not radius; for square columns enter side length. Group only columns with the same section and height, and calculate separate footings or bases independently.

02

What the result includes

Cross-sectional area times height and count gives the raw column volume. The selected allowance increases that total before supply-increment rounding. Round volume uses πd²/4; square volume uses side², so the section choice matters.

03

When to adjust allowance

Use measured form dimensions and an allowance appropriate to placement and supplier delivery. Treat changes in section, height, embedded bases and irregular capitals separately; do not increase the diameter merely to represent general spill.

04

Limitations

The model does not size a structural column, specify reinforcement, assess form pressure or deduct displacement. Tapered columns and mixed sizes require separate geometry; form capacity and safe placement remain project-design decisions.
