A dependable material estimate starts with clear field information. Use this guide as a practical review alongside current product instructions and project requirements.

01

Convert dimensions, not habits

Use the unit system printed on the drawing or product where possible. Convert only when information must cross systems, and keep the source measurement in your notes for checking later.

02

Watch area and volume conversions

Linear conversion factors are not enough for square and cubic quantities. A small mistake grows quickly when a length factor must be squared or cubed, so let a calculator preserve the dimensional relationship.

03

Product sizes remain local

A converted sheet dimension is not automatically a locally stocked product. Treat quantity calculations and product availability as two separate decisions.

Field note

Save the original measurements, unit system, product coverage, and waste assumption with the estimate. Those four details make a result much easier to check.
