A dependable material estimate starts with clear field information. Use this guide as a practical review alongside current product instructions and project requirements.
Coverage is conditional
A label usually assumes a stated thickness, smooth substrate, application method, and ideal loss rate. Rough, porous, or repaired surfaces can change the real figure substantially.
Use the same basis
Compare square-foot coverage with area and cubic-foot coverage with volume. If a product states a range, use the lower figure for planning unless the surface closely matches the ideal condition.
Keep a record
Save the product, batch, coverage assumption, and final quantity used. That record improves the next estimate and helps with maintenance or repairs.
Save the original measurements, unit system, product coverage, and waste assumption with the estimate. Those four details make a result much easier to check.
